Application of a strategic management maturity model in universities: A case study

Although strategic management is very critical for all types of organizations, only a few maturity models have been proposed in the business literature for the area of strategic management activities and no maturity models have been proposed for universities. The main objective of this study is to develop a general, flexible and comprehensive "Strategic Management maturity model" for universities (SMMM). The methodology used builds a maturity model based on Strategic Management practices. Data were collected through an online survey sent by email to members of a university community. The SMMM results provide a theoretical continuum along which the maturity process can be developed incrementally from one level of maturity to another for the seven Strategic Management processes. It is concluded that the SMMM provides a tiered framework to initiate step-by-step change within a university based on its current level of Strategic Management Maturity.
